How much car or auto insurance you need really depends upon the value of your assets and how well protected they are as well as the mandatory requirements for insurance in the State of Nevada. If you have significant assets that are currently in your name, you should definitely carry more than the State’s minimum liability coverage. But even if your only possession is your car, you should carry more than the State’s minimum liability coverage. In Nevada, each driver must carry at least $15,000 in coverage for bodily injury for one person who may be injured in an accident and $30,000 for bodily injury of two or more people who may be injured from the accident, as well as $10,000 for property damage. This is often referred to as 15/30/10 coverage. BEWARE: If you’re carrying the minimum liability coverage and you’re injured in the accident, your insurance policy WILL NOT pay for your medical needs and it also WILL NOT pay for the needed repairs to your vehicle. The better option is to carry collision and comprehensive coverage which would then atleast cover the necessary repairs to your own vehicle. You can also add Med Pay coverage which is intended to pay for your necessary medical expenses as a result of the accident. You should also really add underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage. The purpose of underinsured and uninsured coverage is to provide added protection to you if you’re involved in an accident with someone who has no insurance or too little insurance (a person who opted for the State’s minimum liability coverage) to compensate for the damages caused in the accident. If you have valuable items inside your vehicle, you may also want to obtain a seperate policy to cover your personal property. The more insurance you carry, naturally, the more covered you are in the unfortunate event you are involved in an auto accident. The extra coverage usually only costs a few hundred dollars more annually, but it can make sure you always have a vehicle to drive and can go to the doctor if you need to after an accident. If you have medical insurance already, you may not need the extra Med Pay coverage, but again, it should only cost a few dollars more to include Med-Pay coverage and more is better then less. In summary, the amount of insurance you need is really more than the State of Nevada requires, but at the very least, you must carry 15/30/10.

This may sound absurd, however, if you’ve had too many drinks and decide to do the “responsible” thing and sleep it off in your car, you can still be charged with a DUI. All too often, people wake up to the police knocking on their window and arresting them for DUI, even though they were just sleeping. In Nevada, the key is whether you were “in actual physical control” of the motor vehicle. If you got in the driver seat to sleep while you were intoxicated and had the keys in the ignition with the vehicle in park, that may still be enough for the City or State to charge you with DUI. If you have to sleep it off, the best advice is to sleep anywhere safe outside the vehicle, such as a hotel room. If you must sleep in the car, keep your car keys far from the ignition, such as in your pocket or purse, sleep in the back seat, and never turn on the vehicle.

Many times after an auto accident, the other driver’s insurance company will try to contact you to “discuss” the accident. They usually call you and make it sound like it’s urgent or even required that you call them back. Please avoid talking to them. The only reason they want to speak with you is to obtain a recorded statement from you that they will try to use against you or your insurance company at a later date. They have no real interest in helping you. If you don’t answer their multiple calls, they will usually try to mail letters to you asking that you fill out forms. Please do not fill anything out, unless it comes from your own insurance company, and only after you completely understand what your filling out and what it is for. The only insurance company you should call or respond to after an accident, is your own. You have no obligation to speak with or return mail to the other insurance company. Please consult an experienced attorney if you’ve been injured in accident. We are here to answer your questions. Call us for a free consultation. (702) 333-6339.

You may be wondering if you should contact your insurance company following an auto accident. Yes, you should do so within 24-48 hours, if possible. Your insurance policy usually requires this notification. You should call and provide the date, time, and location of the accident, the name of the other driver, and their insurance information. Avoid providing a recorded statement before speaking with an attorney. Avoid answering any questions related to cause of the accident unless the other driver rear ended you. Your insurance company will want to send an adjuster to see your vehicle and assess it’s damage. If you were injured in the accident, you should consult an attorney. Please do not hesitate to contact us for a free consultation.
